Fourth Annual 5K and Drone Demo
For the fourth consecutive year we were blessed with great weather for our 5K for Ukraine. Paul Hannon with Hann-Co Drone Services kindly conducted a drone demonstration. To our surprise he produced a five-minute video with overhead footage of the race. We have added this to our Sunflower Seeds presentation.
We had about 50 participants and volunteers and a gross income of $3,500.

Multiple Trips Made to Athens and Logan to Deliver and Pick Up Medical Supplies
May 19 – Bob and John with U-Haul to Athens
On May 19, Dr. Bob and John delivered a full SUV and ¾ of a U-Haul full of boxes of medical supplies to Little Wing Relief Works (LWRW) in Athens, Ohio.
From there supplies are picked up by a transport group out of Lancaster, Ohio, and trucked to Norfolk. From there the 40’ shipping container is shipped to Lithuania. From there it is put back on a semi and driven to Kyiv to the UA First Aid group.
July 21 – John to Logan
On July 21 John traveled to Logan to meet with Pastor Nick with the expectation of discussing our process for receiving and sending supplies with the Logan Regional Medical Center CEO, Justin Turner. Mr. Turner was in another meeting, but to our surprise, arrangements had already been made for us to pick up dozens of boxes of supplies. So many in fact, that John’s Toyota Highlander could not fit them all in.

August 7 Trip to Athens
On August 7 John and Debbie (and Sunny) made the trip to Athens with a small U-Haul. Dr. Bob and three men from Recovery Point helped load up the supplies that morning. (see picture below)
Tom Mudley helped unload supplies at an unused fire station that the mayor of Athens has allowed LWRW to use for storage. We were fortunate that LRMC had given us two wheelchairs, which were used to transport dozens of boxes into storage. (see picture below)
August 11 – Pickup with Pastor Nick in Charleston
On August 11 John met with Pastor Nick and Natasha and their daughter at Gabe’s in Charleston, a good half-way point between Logan and Huntington, to pick up the remaining boxes donated by LRMC. Plus Gabe’s is a favorite shopping spot for Pastor Nick and his family.
To date we have prepared nearly 240 boxes for shipment.

Arts Walks
We were a vendor at two art walks sponsored by the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District this past summer. We also added two new pieces to our art merch. Blenko Art Glass was commissioned to create a Blenko “bag” vase. The color is called tangerine, but it transitions to maroon. (see merch – only 10 are left).
Also, our friend Jim Trankina surprised us by painting a piece titled the “Blue Vase.” He does masterful work in oils. The original was auctioned off at the Taste of Ukraine, but prints, some framed, are still available.

The Orange Connection
To date, Sunflower Seeds has committed over $14,256 for the purchase of humanitarian aid supplies with partners in Orange, France. In total 13,200 lbs. of aid have been sent over six trips. On April 1, 2026 we sent $3,150 for the purchase of diesel fuel for the seventh trip to Poland.
Jaroslaw, Poland and Orange are “Sister Cities” and four years ago Jaroslaw reached out for help as they were being overwhelmed by refugees. The town is located just 25 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Supplies Sunflower Seeds helped purchase supplies and fuel for the fifth trip that reached into several areas of Ukraine where “in-country” refugees are located including: Kharkiv, Svatove, Zaporizhzhya, and undisclosed locations on the front lines. Aid was delivered in May of 2023.
For the sixth trip, Sunflower Seeds contributed toward the purchase of 504 meals and three military-grade stretchers. Both the food and stretchers were delivered in March of 2024.
Photos here show the delivery of aid made in an area between the Russian border and Kharkiv (between Leman and Kupyansk). Just days later this area was under vicious attack by Russian forces.
